Quick answer: A new lease gives you a brand-new car for a full two to four year term, usually with money down. A lease takeover gives you a car that is already on the road, with no new down payment and only the months that are left. Either way, the leasing company must approve your credit.

If you want a specific new model, a dealer lease is the only way. If you want a shorter commitment, or you would rather skip the down payment, a takeover is usually the cheaper way to get a car for lease. See how a lease transfer works.

What a car lease really costs per month

The advertised payment is rarely the full cost. Add tax, spread any fees over the months you will drive, and subtract any cash a seller gives you. Use the same formula for a takeover and a new lease:

Effective monthly cost = (payment with tax × months left + lessor's transfer fee − seller's cash incentive) ÷ months left

Tax is charged on every lease payment and depends on where the car is registered:

ProvinceTax on each lease payment
Ontario13% HST
Quebec5% GST + 9.975% QST
British Columbia5% GST + PST from 7%, higher for more expensive vehicles
Alberta5% GST only (no provincial sales tax)

For a new lease, count the down payment too: divide it by the number of months in the term and add it to the monthly figure.

Common questions

Can you lease a used car in Canada?

Some dealers and leasing companies lease used vehicles, but it is less common than leasing new. Taking over an existing lease is the usual way to get a used car on lease. See can you lease a used car in Canada.

Do I need good credit to take over a car lease?

The leasing company runs a credit check on the person taking over, just as it would for a new lease. If it declines you, the transfer does not go ahead.

What is the cheapest way to get a car for lease?

Usually a takeover with a low payment, no down payment and a seller cash incentive. Compare options on effective monthly cost, not on the advertised payment.

Can I lease a car for only 6 or 12 months?

New leases normally run two to four years. A takeover with 6 to 12 months left is the practical way to get a short lease.
